Legislative Action Update

The 2019 Washington State legislative session is nearly complete, and the following critical issues for our students have not been resolved:

• Large general budget shortfalls beginning in 2019-2020 school year, which will result in teacher layoffs and cuts to student services in Seattle 
• Severe under-funding of special education services
• Inability for districts to meet K-3 class size requirements

Hello, I'm a parent of an Eckstein Middle School student (Seattle Public Schools), and a member of the Washington State PTA (WSPTA). Seattle Public Schools District faces a $40 million-dollar shortfall next school year. For my student, this will mean bigger class sizes, staff layoffs, and other cuts. Our district is also underfunded by tens of millions of dollars for special education services and is struggling to meet state requirements for K-3 class sizes.
