Eckstein Weekly: June 24, 2020

8/23/2020

A Message From Your PTSA
Dear Eckstein Families,

George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and Charleena Lyles. Four Black lives that were lost at the hands of police or by killers shielded by law enforcement. These and many other deaths are continuing confirmation of systemic racism in our country.

The Eckstein PTSA is committed to seizing this moment to address structural inequities that exist for our students and within our community.  We like to think that we are “all in this together,” but we are not together in experiencing the inequities of racism. We are not together in experiencing the inequities of the global pandemic, the Stay at Home Order, or the temporary closing of our schools. Black, Indigenous and People of Color in our country have been made to carry the weight of the inequity.

As a first step in doing our part to foster an anti-racist Eckstein community, the Eckstein PTSA has passed the Resolution on Combatting Racism . This resolution signifies our commitment to do the work that is necessary to combat systemic racism in our PTSA, school, and community. As a result of this resolution, the PTSA has agreed to take the following actions:
  • Establish a new Executive Committee Chair for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
  • Create a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee that will help to ensure Eckstein Middle School PTSA makes concerted efforts to address systematic racism and racial injustice.
  • Commit to annually conduct equity, diversity, and inclusion training for all PTSA Board members.
  • Commit to providing resources and education on racism to the Eckstein community beginning 2020/21.

The Eckstein PTSA Board and the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee will be meeting over the summer to plan further actions in-line with this resolution for the upcoming school year. We strongly encourage you to participate by sending us your thoughts and ideas, or by joining the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee. Please contact the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee at DEIcommittee@ecksteineaglesptsa.org .

We recognize that the work of dismantling systemic racism in our school and community will not be done over the course of one year, or solely by the Eckstein Middle School PTSA. This new resolution is our commitment toward continued education, action, and advocacy in our school, community, city, and state. As long as the lives and well-being of children and families of color in our community continue to be under threat, our resolve to promote equity and combat racism will not waver.

Sincerely,
Eckstein Middle School PTSA Board

PTSA News
Congratulations to 2019-20 Golden Acorn Award Winners!

Every year, the Eckstein PTSA presents the Golden Acorn award to one volunteer and one teacher/staff in recognition of dedication and service to students at Eckstein. Thank you to all the students, parents, and staff who sent in nominations. We have a lot to be thankful for at Eckstein!

The 2019-20 Teacher/Staff Golden Acorn winner is Ms. Levine!
Nominations for Ms. Levine, a 6th grade science teacher, mentioned that her class is "interesting and a lot of fun" and that she is "an incredible source of courage, strength, and leadership." People noted that she has supported kids' activism around the crisis of systemic racism and often rode her bike to school. She is a great example for our kids!

The 2019-20 Volunteer Golden Acorn goes to Amy Olason!
Nominations for Amy included the fact that she has volunteered her time EVERY WEEK for the last FOUR YEARS as the parent representative on the Building Leadership Team. She will be missed in the Eckstein Community as her kids graduate!

Thank You!

Eagle Life
Help Care for the Eckstein Garden!
In order to keep the garden alive this summer we need volunteers to help water.
Our garden is a unique part of the Eckstein community. It contains an orchard, a perennial garden filled with native plants, vegetables and herbs, and a sensory garden. Students work there during lunch and volunteers help weed, prune, and plant. The garden hosts different events throughout the year, and we welcome anyone to join us, no experience necessary.

Please help by committing to a week or two of watering. The garden can be watered in the morning or evening.
