Friends of
Eckstein MS Pickleball
Friends of Eckstein MS Pickleball was formed in the fall of 2017 with a vision to replace the damaged, no longer used tennis court at Eckstein with four dedicated pickleball courts. The pickleball courts would be used by students during school hours, in PE classes, and during open play at lunch time. The general public would have access to teh courts in the evenings until dusk, on weekends, and on any school holidays and vacation breaks.

A new leadership team is needed for Friends of Eckstein MS Pickleball, to move this concept into reality. If you are interested contact the PTSA or Email [email protected].
Project Summary & Current Status June 2019
A public input, construction and design process was conducted Jan - May 2019. The results are construction specification documents to seek bids, should this project be funded and move forward. Seattle Schools operations department has these documents and would assist with the bidding process.
New project leaders are needed to tackle the next steps: identifying funding by securing grants and matching funds via donations.

Next Steps:
Phase 2 (next): Community outreach and grant development
We have formal design and construction specifications, accomplished through Phase 1: Fall 2018 - May 2019. Committee members are needed to create awareness in the Eckstein community, organize fundraising $20K, submitting a Department of Neighborhood grant application in September 2019, or March 2020.
Estimated project costs are $ 50K - $ 55K for a base level of implementation. Fundraising of approximately $ 25,000 in matching funds is needed in order to apply for a $ 25,000 Department of Neighborhood (DON), Neighborhood Matching Fund (“NMF”) Grant.
Phase 3: Project management oversight of construction (Spring & Summer 2020)
The Seattle Schools facilities & operations department is committed to providing operational support throughout the process. (Gretchen DeDecker, Self Help projects office). Seattle Parks Foundation (501-3c status) serves as the group’s Fiscal sponsor and Treasurer, providing oversight, holding funds, invoice processing, providing an online donation page, and donor receipt system. This relationship keeps the project separate from the PTSA main budget, for donor clarity, and not overwhelming the finances of the Eckstein MS PTSA. Seattle Parks Foundation is a private nonprofit foundation, they are NOT affiliated with the City of Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation.
The Eckstein PTSA supports this project, but is not directly managing it or financing it due to its potentially large scope. This project group is formally named "Friends of Eckstein MS Pickleball" with a 501(c)(3) status as a Parks Foundation client.
